What is SMP?

A natural-looking answer to hair loss

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP), often referred to as a “hair tattoo”, is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment designed to replicate the natural appearance of hair follicles. Using specialised micro-needles and natural carbon pigments, tiny impressions are placed into the scalp to create the appearance of realistic hair follicles. This can help create the look of greater hair density, define a hairline, and camouflage areas of hair loss or scarring. SMP can be custom designed to complement your natural hair colour, skin tone, hairline and desired level of density, creating a subtle and realistic look.

Best suited to men who already shave their head, or who are ready to. Tiny impressions are layered across the scalp to recreate the look of closely-shaved hair, including a hairline designed to suit your face shape and age. This is usually built over two to four sessions, spaced a couple of weeks apart, so the density can be added gradually and adjusted as it heals. Hair needs to be kept trimmed short so everything blends evenly.

For thinning hair where you still have coverage you want to keep. Pigment is placed between your existing hairs to reduce the contrast between hair and scalp, so less scalp shows through. You keep your usual haircut and style. Suitability will be discussed at your consultation.

For scalp scars, including strip and FUE marks from hair transplants, and scars from injury or surgery. Pigment is worked into and around the scar to reduce how much it stands out against the surrounding hair. Scar tissue takes pigment differently to normal skin, so results vary more and extra sessions are sometimes needed. Scars should be fully healed and settled before treatment.

Kayla is an accredited and insured scalp micropigmentation specialist working out of a private studio in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. She comes to SMP from over 15 years of tattooing, most of it hand-poked work. It is a slower, more delicate style, done dot by dot rather than by machine. SMP asks for the same things: thousands of tiny impressions placed with patience and a steady hand, so the result looks like natural hair.

Every treatment starts with a relaxed consultation, where the hairline, density and pigment tone are designed around you before any work begins.

Will it look natural or fake?

The goal is always a natural result that blends into your own hair. It is designed to look like real hair, not a painted-on look. Results vary from person to person, which is why we talk it all through at your consultation.

Does SMP hurt?

Most people find it very manageable and rate it around a 2 out of 10, though some sensitivity can occur.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually two to four sessions, spread over a few weeks. This is an estimate, as everyone's skin heals differently. We build your plan at the consultation.

How much does SMP cost in Sydney?

It depends on the treatment and the extent of the hair loss, so every quote is personal. Prices range from $1,500 to $4,000. You'll receive a clear quote for your treatment at your consultation.

How long does it last?

SMP is long lasting, but it can soften over time, so a refresh is generally recommended every five years or so. This is normal and part of looking after your result.

Do I need to shave my head?

For a shaved-head look, yes, you will need to keep your hair trimmed short so everything blends evenly. For density on thinning hair, you keep your usual style. We will explain exactly what suits you.
